Considering that a bulk of the
Android phones sold today is in the midrange segment, the internal
memory is unlikely to be huge by any stretch of imagination.
It is only recently that Android phones
have started offering more than 64 GB of internal storage as standard,
but even these are only found on the high-end phones. As a result, the
users are often found with the need to free up space on their internal
storage or go for external memory cards. The support for the latter is
increasingly going down in the search for thin phones.
Checking the Existing Capacity
The storage details of an Android phone
can be found under the ‘settings’ app in the ‘storage’ tab. The
information provided here is extremely comprehensive, as the memory used
by each individual section is shown clearly. This helps make a decision
where the maximum savings can be done.
Uninstall Apps
This is one of the foremost ways of
clearing up some memory. Many applications may be installed on the
device, but we may be using only a select few. There may even be cases
of some apps being never used since the first installation. New phones
may also suffer from the case of bloatware, where the manufacturer
preinstalls a range of apps. The bloatware can be removed once the
device is rooted. For now, one can remove every other app that is not in
use.
Clear Cache
Over a period of time, a bulk of the
memory is actually the cache. This is of no use after a certain stage
and it only slows down the phone. Clearing the cache periodically not
only quickens the device, but it can also bring about substantial
savings in terms of memory.
Of course, if you do not want to clear
the entire cache memory all in one go, the cache memory for individual
applications can be removed by going into the ‘individual app settings’
within the ‘settings’ app. Some apps – like maps application – can build
up a huge amount of cache.
Deleting Pictures and Videos
Sometimes, the media on the device can
occupy a vast amount of data and it is advisable to periodically shift
the content to the desktop if they are of great importance. Videos, in
particular, occupy a large amount of data. Given the higher quality
cameras in modern smartphones, even pictures occupy a significant amount
of memory.
